WEISS Applications

WEISS has become the unique system used to inventory and report all emissions to surface waters in Belgium. This greatly increases the compliance and interoperability of data exchange between the three regions (Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels) responsible for gathering the information for reporting to the EU, the European Environment Agency, the EPRTR, etc. The Port of Antwerp was one of the early users of WEISS in its endeavor to improve the quality of the surface waters in the port area.

WEISS Flanders

WEISS Flanders was initiated at the start of the EU-Life+ project ‘WEISS’ in 2010. It is used and continuously updated and upgraded by VMM for all its compulsory inventorying and reporting tasks. It also provides input for water quality modelling. It represents the full Flemish region of Belgium, covering some 1,350,000 hectares, at a 1ha resolution. It currently stores information with respect to some 80 substances (heavy metals, PAH’s, pharmaceuticals and plant protection products), some 120 diffuse sources and around 1,500 point sources. Information is stored for the years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

WEISS Brussels

WEISS for Brussels was initiated in 2013. It is used and continuously updated by BIM/IGBE for its compulsory inventorying and reporting tasks. It represents the Brussels region of Belgium, covering some 25,000 hectares at a resolution of ¼ha . It currently stores information with respect to some 92 substances (heavy metals, PAH’s, plant protection products, other organic compounds), some 120 diffuse emission sources and some 1,700 point sources. Information is stored for the year 2013.

WEISS Wallonia

WEISS for Brussels was initiated in 2013. It is used and continuously updated by BIM/IGBE for its compulsory inventorying and reporting tasks. It represents the Brussels region of Belgium, covering some 25,000 hectares at a resolution of ¼ha . It currently stores information with respect to some 92 substances (heavy metals, PAH’s, plant protection products, other organic compounds), some 120 diffuse emission sources and some 1,700 point sources. Information is stored for the year 2013.

WEISS Port of Antwerp

WEISS Port of Antwerp was initiated in 2012 before the WEISS software was finalized and available. Initially the emission inventory was produced according to the WEISS methodology for some 29 substances (heavy metals, aluminium, PAH’s, mineral oil) and some 32 diffuse emission sources for the year 2010. The whole port area, covering some 12,000 hectares is represented at a resolution of ¼ha. In 2016, the information will be updated and expanded and will be incorporated in the latest version of WEISS. It will consist of some 75 sources and 29 substances.
